Havasupai Changes 2009

I know you have heard the rumors, I have heard them myself, "I heard Havasupai was destroyed and its not really there anymore" or "I have heard that it really isn't that fun and that not many people are still going". If you have heard these or other rumors, don't be alarmed. Despite what you may have heard, the new Havasupai is still great. Overall it is a little different than the traditional version of Havasupai when it comes to the waterfalls and a couple of other things. However, it still is one of the happiest places on earth.

Navajo Falls is dried up. The river changed its course with all the sediment that it took downstream.

Upper and Lower Rock falls is a good replacement with some really clear water but its not Navajo Falls. Those that loved Navajo, still miss it. There was nothing quite like Navajo Falls and there still isn't.

Havasu Falls is not as wide at the mouth of the fall as it used to be. It used to be 4 to 5 times wider. The sediment that was dumped into the bottom of Havasu Falls has made the swimming area somewhat smaller and shallower. The travertine pools at the bottom at shallower and not as conducive to swimming or jumping. There is a big mound of dirt there not where is used to just be flowing waters.

Mooney Falls is much the same as sediment has shallowed out lagoon below greatly. However, there is much fun to be had at Mooney! There may be even more fun at Mooney with the new changes. It is more accessible than it used to be.

Beaver Falls experienced much of the same as sediment has shallowed the pool below greatly as well as eliminated the ability to jump from a few popular spots. The green room is gone as well as the jump on the east side of the main cascade of Beaver Falls. The water is very shallow at Beaver now and doesn't allow for much swimming at all.

Despite the changes, Havasupai is still tons of fun and still beautiful. Those that knew it before will be somewhat disappointed because of the lack of the things that they were used to seeing.

Other than the waterfalls, there really aren't many other things that are different when it comes to Havasupai. It still rock and is still on my adventure list for years to come.
